To use Claude AI, sign up for a free account at claude.ai, start a chat, and describe a real task in plain language, the way you'd brief a capable new colleague. The answers get much better when you give Claude the context only you know, refine its draft with specific feedback, and check the facts before you use it. Here's how to get started, and where to go when you want more than the basics.
What Claude is (and what it isn't)
Claude is an AI model made by Anthropic. You write to it in plain language and it writes back. It's very good with language: drafting, summarizing, explaining and rewriting.
It isn't a search engine. Unless web search is turned on, Claude writes from patterns it learned rather than looking anything up. That's why it can write a great first draft and get a date wrong in the same answer, with equal confidence.
How to get started
- Create a free account at claude.ai. The same account works in the desktop app for Mac and Windows and the phone app for iPhone and Android.
- Start with the free plan. It's enough to learn on. Paid plans raise your usage limits and add more features. Check Claude's pricing page for the current options.
- Pick one real task from this week, such as a meeting agenda, a tricky reply or a summary of a long document, and take it from first prompt to finished result.
The habit that matters most: context
Claude fills every gap you leave with the most average guess. That's why so many first answers feel generic. The fix isn't clever wording. It's telling Claude what only you know: who the work is for, what you want to happen, and what a good result looks like.
Get that right and the first draft goes from something you'd rewrite to something you'd edit. The course covers exactly what to include every time, with a before-and-after example and a template you can reuse.
What separates good results from generic ones
Context is the first step. The people who get real time back from Claude also know how to:
- show Claude examples, so its writing sounds like yours
- give feedback that improves a draft instead of starting over
- work with their own files: contracts, spreadsheets, reports and screenshots
- use Claude to think through a decision, not just get an answer
- check its work quickly before trusting it
- know what's safe to paste in, and what to keep out
Then they go further: projects that already know their clients and standards, Claude connected to Google Drive and Gmail, and workflows built around the recurring tasks in their week.
Learn it properly with Claude Fundamentals
All of that is what my course, Claude Fundamentals, teaches: six modules of short video lessons for business owners, managers and knowledge workers, with no technical background needed.
The founding edition is open now: Module 1 is out, and a new module follows every week. Start Claude Fundamentals.
